The Ninth Prasad – Eden and The Fall

For a very long period these early humans lived in harmony with Nature as foragers and nomads and as non-savage Earth Citizens. Your earliest ancestors did not even eat Earth Citizen flesh; while even some Planetmates do that.

But this long tranquil time was destined to end. As gestations became shorter and more time was needed in the dependent state before the newborn could function much for itself, the gap between natural functioning and twisted, backwards human functioning widened. For the rest of your lives, the pain and trauma of birth and from the time in the dependent state after birth pushed tension, anxiety, overstimulated brains and states of consciousness, and behavior more and more disparate from Nature’s easy, simple flow. And the biggest part of that crazed behavior pushed by fear and anxiety emanating from the roots of your being was your ever stronger drive to control.

So, all these changes happened gradually over a very long time. You were once a part of Nature, and you remained that way for millions of years, even as your body changed. Even when you became human, as we have just defined you, your ancestors still lived in harmony with Nature. Bipedalism was now fully in place and functional; birth pain had increased; you were living in stable social units that supported the excessive dependency of your children; and your brains were at the size, roughly, that they are today. Your mind was fevered and crazed, caught up as it was with the after-effects of your early birth trauma and your infancy deprivations, that is true.
You began engaging in strange and unusual behavior to deal with these compulsions and delusions. You began fashioning items and art that harkened back to those days of pain. You began engaging in unusual and repetitive behaviors that involved these objects. Having had such a trying experience at your birth, many of these actions and items involved your re-creating that time, for in this way you could acquire some relief from the feverish thoughts. The excess items of your mental peregrinations could be completed somewhat. Completion brought temporary relief from their assaults in the mind.

At this time you lived by foraging, like all the rest of Nature. Your food sources were what could be acquired among the Flora Kingdom as well as what could be gathered from water — those “vegetables of the sea”: shellfish and fish, for example. However you did not eat flesh. Your harmony with Nature was such that you refrained from the killing of life forms resembling your own — warm-blooded ones of the Fauna Kingdom — for you still felt kinship with them. They were still, to you, your brothers and sisters from all kinds of other mothers. You were not inclined to kill. In fact, though even some warm-blooded Earth Citizens will use other warm-blooded species as a food source, you were not among them. Your diet included vegetation, insects, lizards, snakes, shellfish, turtles, fish, and the like; but it did not include what you call “meat” — that is, planetmate flesh. You were anything but savage; you were peaceful.

You maintained this way of living even as your forebears migrated more and more away from the places of water. A change in environment led the ones who would end up being you today to go inland for fresher water and eventually, after a long time, out onto the vast plains, whose resources involved changes in your diet. This whole time you were foragers, and in following the food supply you were nomadic.

You were like this for hundreds of thousands of years and it was a relatively tranquil time. You followed your body’s promptings in healing the effects of your early traumas, which gave you relief from your overheated brain … for your body, like all of Nature, has its ways of healing itself if you simply allow it. Indeed, these strange and repetitive behaviors and these items you created to which you gave so much attention … very strange to us, seemed to help you stay in harmony with the rest of us. You were not alien; hardly were you at war with us, as you later became and are today.

And, sure enough, this long Edenal period began to change. Your females had now the shorter times of carrying your young in the womb, and your infants had now that extremely long time of dependency and nurture as your brains finished developing, outside of the womb. So these inner fevers were constantly pushing your minds along darkened and twisted paths. You had anxiety and fear that we do not know, even to this day.

Such fear, after-effects from your abnormal beginnings, clouded the way you saw everything and you were less able to simply accept the easy flow of Nature and its Providence. Fear led to worry. Worry led to mistrust. You exaggerated the down side of every activity and minimized the more fortuitous and likely aspect of it.

You were beginning the separation from the rest of us. You were our troubled brothers and sisters who were going astray. You were our backward cousins, not quite getting it. It was clear that you were more tense and anxious than any of us and so less able to take in the simple pleasure of aliveness. Your mind was actively putting the world at a distance, as if you were afraid of it … No doubt your earliest experiences with that outside world, as in the way you first encountered the Other during the process of birth — which made you feel that it was characterized by difficulty and pain and was alien to you and not in accord with you — and in your interactions with it as an infant — which would obviously make you feel that the outside world could not be counted on to satisfy one’s needs, that it was random and unpredictable, and that it was only minimally attentive to one’s needs and not necessarily on one’s side — would lead you as adults to mistrust the world as well.

Divine Providence is there for all of us, but you began forgetting or not seeing it. You began to take into your own hands the satisfaction of things that would otherwise have been taken care of for you in the process of things. You have a saying, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”; but indeed that is exactly what you did. Your overstimulated brains and fevered states of consciousness would push you to tinker with things that were just fine the way they were. In doing so, you would inevitably “break” them — that is, you would screw them up. Your “improvements” upon Nature and its ways would most often bring side effects that themselves became new problems to solve. You managed to muck up the ordinary flow of things. We saw you as crazed and distant in the world of Nature. You were separating from us more and more. You were ejecting your own self from the Edenal existence we enjoy. You were setting up struggles for yourself — totally unnecessary ones — which caused you to have to overwork. It seemed, sure enough, that you desired to be caught up in struggles with the things of the world and with each other as if to relieve your fevered brain. Indeed, you seemed to be doing as adults what you needed to do as a fetus trying to make its way into the world. Just as you had to struggle at that time with the Other, seeing it as an opposing force, you were now struggling with the world around you and everything in it. You were fighting off and challenging even any aid that was coming your way, as you would misinterpret it.

So your birth seemed to imprint you to struggle throughout life; and your early infant experience of insufficient satisfaction of needs, because of all too imperfect caregivers, caused you to mistrust that you would get your basic needs met throughout your life. You worried and you struggled.

And you controlled. This was the beginnings of your loss of Edenal existence. You no longer allowed the All That Is to give you what you needed, you, mistrusting that, would expend all kinds of extra effort in determining that your needs would be met, but also the how, the when, and so forth, of that. This was a big part of that mucking with things that did not need fixing … and sure enough … as we will continually demonstrate to you … it has had consequences worse … eventually far worse … than if you had just been able to let things be as they would be.

The First Retreat from the Natural Self Was Matriarchal Consciousness; It Should Hardly Be Our Goal: You Cannot “Balance” a Duality … You Can Only Transcend One.

Matriarchy Is Not an Answer to Patriarchy: Is “White Man’s” Pride and Prejudices Keeping Us from Seeing Our Real Solutions, Our Primal Return?

TheGardenOfEden

A Golden Age

The question that naturally arises from the preceding chapter’s conclusions on the current state of affairs and their unfortunately intractable response is, What can be done about the present crisis in consciousness? But in order to do anything about our situation, we must delve a little deeper into understanding this state of consciousness and into how it has come to be that way. A more thorough exposition of exactly that endeavor can be found in several other works of mine (The Great Reveal, Apocalypse Emergency, Apocalypse—No!, 21st Century and Its Discontents, and Adzema, 1993a, 1993b).

From Ancient Greece?

images20120115-195400For our purposes here, I would like to point out that similar conclusions to what we have arrived at about our crisis have been coming forth from many quarters of our culture in modern times. Examples are Rupert Sheldrake’s The Rebirth of Nature, Marilyn French’s Beyond Power, Theodore Roszak’s  The Voice of the Earth, Starhawk’s The Spiral Dance: A Rebirth of the Ancient Religion of the Great Goddess, Richard Tarnas’s The Passion of the Western Mind, John White’s The Meeting of Science and Spirit, and Ken Wilber’s Up from Eden. Nevertheless, what almost all of these perspectives lack is a well-grounded anthropological perspective (Beyond Power being the notable exception). Their analysis of the historical process that has brought us to this pass is often heavily conditioned by a Western bias towards history which sees humanity as beginning in ancient Greece during a matriarchal “Golden Age.”

Completely overlooking, in this way, the full 99% of our specie’s history that occurred prior to that time — when we truly did live in harmony with Nature, as foragers and then hunter-gatherers — these theorists naturally come to the conclusion that our problems in consciousness arose when we switched over from a matriarchal mode of existence to a patriarchal one: That is, with the advance of nomadic patriarchal conquerors over the pastoral and agricultural “matriarchal” cultures of the Hellenic period of ancient Greece.

Matriarchal Is Not an Answer to Patriarchal

This is unfortunate because to seek to find a Golden Age in the matriarchal period has required of such writers that they completely overlook many of the obvious shortcomings of the matriarchal view. This is not to say that the matriarchal cultures may not have been more harmonious with Nature … and with their inner natures … than their patriarchal successors. That they were less violent is also true. Therefore, that matriarchal cultures were less “fallen from grace” than patriarchal ones is not something I would dispute.

What I think is crucial to make known, however, is that the matriarchal cultures themselves were also “fallen from grace”: from a previous, even more “golden” state — one which was even less violent and more harmonious with Nature. [Footnote 1]

Is “White Man’s” Pride and Prejudices Keeping Us from Seeing Our Real Solutions, Our Primal Return?

But the writers in this area are apparently unaware of the true conditions of cultures outside of or prior to the Western “royal” line. Evidently, they are still to some extent influenced by the Western conditioning which has us scapegoat and denigrate such cultures and viewpoints as “primitive,” “savage,” and “uncivilized.” Thus they have us begin our history with a supposed “Greek miracle,” where we are said to have just “awakened” from a prior collective addiction to superstition, magic, and violence.

Lawlor_iconRobert Lawlor, in his book, Voices of the First Day, is one theorist who has not made such a mistake. In fact, Lawlor’s depiction of the aboriginal Australian world view demonstrate exactly the kind of “unfallenness,” “higher consciousness,” and harmony with Reality that most “matriarchal” theorists think they are espousing. It is one that is more truly in line with what might actually be our Reality — as the cutting edges of our sciences are finally telling us … despite themselves. It is interesting how we have come full circle in this way.

The First Retreat: Matriarchal Consciousness

Nevertheless, in response to the popular “return to the matriarchy” view, it is important to point out that it is not necessarily a good thing to go to matriarchal consciousness as a way of correcting patriarchal consciousness, even if it does represent a marginally better state of affairs.  For one does not correct the problems inherent in a duality by swinging to the other end in that same duality.

You Cannot “Balance” a Duality … You Can Only Transcend One.

That approach simply reinforces that particular split, that particular duality. After all, one would not think it a good idea to go from a period of totalitarian fascism to one of complete anarchy, for example. That would only put in play the forces to create another extreme crackdown. Neither would one consider it wise to swing from an extreme of hedonistic behavior to one of anal-compulsive repression; nor would one wish to order up a period of flood to counter one of drought!

“Balancing” Opposites Is an Impossible Struggle. Only a “Conjunction of Opposites” Brings Transcendence.

Though this pendulum-swinging tendency is often observed, it is hardly a desirable thing.  So, as it turns out, neither is it an ideal solution to go from patriarchality to matriarchality — just to “balance the opposites” . . . as some matriarchal advocates espouse. For doing either of these extremes sets up and reinforces the forces at the opposite extreme, readying them for the next wild swing in the other direction! No, one can only correct a duality by transcending that duality. And transcending, by the way, involves a synthesis — that is, either a going beyond, or a going before, to a state where both elements are not opposed — to a state where there is a “conjunction of opposites,” not their continued opposition.

Primal Consciousness

Hunter-gatherer consciousness — termed paleolithic consciousness by one researcher — and especially the even earlier forager consciousness was characterized by just such a, relatively, non-dualistic acceptance of That Which Is … for the most part. Its way of life, corresponding, has been called the “original affluent society,” in that it is estimated that only four hours a day were needed for attending to survival concerns.

But a mistrust set in.  Fearfulness and intractability in the face of change followed; and hence there arose the desire to attempt to control Nature, rather than to follow Her and conform to Her rhythms.

Eve of Destruction or Global Healing Crisis: Through Gaia’s Eyes — Nature Balances Herself

Through Gaia’s Eyes — Nature Balances Herself: Eve of Destruction or Global Healing Crisis

Eden Arise — The More Natural Self

Many have proclaimed, in these strange days, that it is our Western estrangement from Mother Nature—our particular need to control—that is at the core of the threats to the end of life on this planet. In such a case, one needs to regain harmony with Nature and acquire a consciousness of cooperation, not control.

It’s Cooperative Not Controlling

clip_image013As Grof has claimed—and my personal experience attests—such a cooperative human nature is indeed our most fundamental human nature. In contrast to the “me versus them,” aggressive, and competitive imprint that is derived from our traumatic and premature human births, this more fundamental human nature is the result of a more fundamental imprint of symbiosis with the Other, as was the case in the womb surround during the relatively blissful prenatal period. The relation of the fetus to the mother at that time is one of cooperation, all needs met, flow in <——> flow out, and synergy of intents.

And when, as an adult, we reconnect with this more fundamental human nature, this more fundamental imprint, it manifests in us as a tendency toward that same kind of reciprocal relationship—cooperative, synergistic, and mutually beneficial. Only, as an adult, the Other with which this reciprocal relationship is had is Society and Nature. For these bear the same characteristics and relation to the adult as the womb did to the fetus.

clip_image015

Our More Fundamental Human Nature—Back to Eden

Furthermore, as Grof and I and many others have discovered, such a more positive human nature occurs naturally in a person when they have faced, reexperienced, and integrated their perinatal unconscious…as opposed to what is usually done, which is, completely denying it, projecting it on a scapegoat or enemy and engaging in wars and social violence.

So it is the recovery of this sort of more fundamental human nature—one in which we are in cooperative and mutually beneficial relationship with Nature, all life on this planet, and other humans—that would remove us from the brink of extinction.

clip_image017

Looking Through Gaia’s Eyes

When you think of it, when you consider that all of Nature—the whole planet, Gaia—is threatened by the actions of our species, and that that Nature would want to avoid this by balancing the elements that are currently skewed, it may be just the kind of global situation we see now around us that Nature would need to create in order to save “HerSelf.” It’s simple: We either change or die. Hey, why the long face!? If Gaia doesn’t look out for HerSelf, who will?

Acting Out

clip_image002Granted, some people are not dealing in a healthy or positive way with the material that is arising. Instead of re-doing their basic programming, these people “act out.” Thus we have increased crime, aggression, hostility, one person against another.

And this fact is glaringly apparent in our big cities, where many who are not integrating this emerging information from outside their ego boundaries—from the unconscious—sadly are instead venting the energy of their pain—which our degenerating environment is opening up to them or giving them access to—in violent, destructive, wasteful, self-destructive, and pathetic ways.

clip_image004One can also look to the grasping at racism, nationalism, and fundamentalism, which are not primarily urban phenomena by any means. These conduits of hatefulness are also a response that people are using to the feelings of pain, uncertainty, insecurity, and doubt that rise up, especially initially, in conjunction with these emerging truths.

Similarly, a great majority of people in general in our society are using drugs of one form or other to gloss over and obscure this emerging material rather than facing and integrating it. All in all these kinds of responses add up to a tragedy. And it is something that, if these reactions end up prevailing, could actually do every one of us in. [Footnote 1]

Helping Out

But about these others, what can we do—those of us who are changing our programming and creating new cultural patterns? It may be practical and advisable much of the time to just get out of their way if the ones acting out choose to kill each other off.

But we are often not able to “get out of the way” of those who are trapped in negativity. In addition, since we are all interconnected, we are bound to at least be indirectly affected by their actions.

clip_image006And most importantly, since we are One and these others are actually ourselves in different garb, to the extent we are able to show compassion and be of assistance, we should not always want to step aside. I begin taking this up in the next chapter, “Derailing the Cycles of War and Violence.” I discuss more fully how exactly we can be helpful to these others, in both small and large ways.

“Eve of Destruction” or Scenery of Healing?

clip_image008To put the current chapter’s theme another way: If we were to concoct a world situation in which we would be forced to take a quantum step in consciousness evolution by healing the nefarious elements of our perinatal unconscious, would not that world situation look something like what we see around us today? Would it not be a world rife with obvious perinatal elements…and influences…with some people resolving and thus being healed of them? While others would act them out and self-destruct because of them…not to mention contributing to our collective global self-destruction, as mentioned earlier?

clip_image010In other words, the situation today, as it looks, could as easily be seen as a prologue to an apocalypse and just as easily be seen as a healing crisis preceding a massive consciousness transformation. Put another way, this same situation can be seen by one person as the “eve of destruction” and another as the “scenery of healing on the pathway to peace.” So which will it be?

In the next and final chapters of this book we will take a look at what are the most likely possibilities for ourselves and our planet, considering all that has been said so far. We will bring together all that we now know to conjecture: Apocalypse? Or Earth rebirth?
