Fetishing and Fearing What’s Hidden … Life Is a Dark Screen: To Be Ignorant of Identity with Divinity Is the Purpose of the Human Form.

Life Is About Learning Not to Project Our Fears onto a Vast Unknown Which Is Essentially No-Thing : The Universe’s Trippiest Game Is to Become Human

Grof_CosmicGameiconSo, Divinity doesn’t ever pick pain for us, except to bring us back to happiness. What I’m getting at is that God is good. The Divine defines goodness. The amount of darkness we see in the Divine is indeed equal to the amount of darkness we have created for ourselves. It may even be a while to realize that even choosing the darkness was perfect, as the light is better seen in contrast to darkness and we better understand our own nature as Divinity, we better understand Truth in relation to the Untruth we hid ourselves with.

Where the Horror Comes In

Training in Faith, In Not Fearing

Remember peek-a-boo? It is the way that mothers teach their babies…by putting something in darkness, putting something out of view. That is what causes the upset, right? But it’s how babies are taught to not fear.

Basically, what we are trying to be taught, in peek-a-boo with God, in giving ourselves pain, is not to fear. We are being taught that when something is not in plain sight, basically not to project our own inner horrors into that unknowing.

fearing-whats-hidden

We can take the example of nakedness and lewdness. We know that cultures determine what is considered lewd largely through determining what is allowed to be seen and what is not. And from this we see there is a kind of a universal truth that what’s ever kept in the darkness is magnified. The darkness is also where we project all the things inside that we don’t know yet. And that’s where all the horror comes from. It’s basically from darkness … from the fact that something is not known.

fearing-fetishing-whats_-hidden_thumb

Fetishing and Fearing What’s Hidden

It is almost like there was a point in every culture where that which attracts inordinate interest, and even fixation, or even fetish, is always that which has been concealed. Where there is no darkness, where there is no hidden truth, let alone agendas, there is no fear.

Without these cultural filters on perception consciousness of nakedness is nothing more than as natural as, and just as overlooked as, our consciousness of the way animals look. They are also “naked.” But how often do you think what any of them look like in detail? You are not thinking about their appearance as being shameful or needing covering up…Well, most people don’t think of animals as needing covering like humans do. And they are not attracting your attention just because they only have fur on them.

There is a lack of interest in nudity and no shame when nothing is concealed. So also with other realities and thoughts. In Divinity—the state of total awareness and light … with everything at hand, or, “at thought,” to be more precise—you are freed from the wondering, worrying, the interest, the fixation, the curiosity…let alone the fear, uncertainty, of terror, horror, all of which arise out of the things that are hidden, that are concealed, that are in darkness.

fetishing-and-fearing-whats-hidden

Horror Comes from What’s Kept in Darkness

The darkness is also where we project all the things inside we don’t know yet. That is where all the horror comes from. It’s basically from darkness … from the fact that something is not known.

Project Our Personal Hiddens onto a Vast Unknown Which Is Essentially No-Thing

Like I’ve been saying, even in peek-a-boo that’s the case. But later, it’s God that teaches us, right? What we’re learning, in peek-a-boo with God, is not to fear. We’re being taught that when something is not in plain sight not to project our own inner horrors into the unknowing or into what always comes down to being no-thing…no thing at all.

The Purpose of the Human Form

Male-doctor-spanking-a-newborn-baby-12383229-0The darkness makes a wonderful screen for projecting imaginary, truly mental, and fleeting as thought non-realities.

It is the reason for choosing the human form…in fact…. That is, to be completely ignorant of your identity with divinity, to create darkness, is the purpose of the human form.

In becoming human, you throw yourself, completely, into such a darkness, with the foreknowledge that God is good, and that you will always be in His, Her presence…. In fact you will be literally moving and thinking in total God immersion, and the only difference between people will be the degree to which they know that, or don’t.

Becoming Human Is God’s Trippiest Game.

jumpcliffSo it is the trippiest game that God plays. Imagine, it would be like any of us throwing ourselves onto another planet with complete total amnesia. teilhardnothumans (2)And the game would not even be known to be a game! You don’t know it’s a game, you just show up! That’s what’s so much different from us and the animals.

So, God plays this game…and we as God choose it because it is the most fraught with…well, let us say…let us simply call it peek-a-boo. By that I mean it is the most fraught with totally and sincerely believing the most horrible and hideous and terrifying things which can happen. It is because of that total amnesia…that lack of any link to truth…that we can believe the most horrible things are possible or real.

planetmates-appalled-at-humans

Life Is a Dark Screen

Life is come into and without any remembrance of our true nature, right? Now, life is essentially, then, a dark screen! Because we have no sense of our true nature, life is essentially a dark screen upon which anything can be found.

So the human form has its purpose in being a kind of a purging of all the unknown within. It’s not that there’s anything necessarily wrong with these things unknown. Life is like a projecting out, so that it can be seen, of all the things that one would conceive as a unique divine actor.

a-projecting-out-of-whats-inside

Animals Remember It Is Just a Movie, Unlike Us.

But this dream-like nature of reality is remembered again when in the presence of the divine, when in Divinity, or even, say, taking on an animal or other form where there is never that total amnesia. For nonhuman planetmates only engage in the kind of pretend that an actor has when performing a role in a play. See that’s what their reality is like. They always remember, so they’re always pretending…even when it’s something seemingly horrible that’s in the script. And they never confuse the role with their own true essence.

How Can God Be Devilish?

So it is only humans, forgetting their nature, who can conceive the incredible horror and act out the most hideous things possible.

humans-project-horror

But that also is part of the plan or game for humanness. For how could God act devilish and murderous unless He allowed Himself? Think about it.

And I know you’re saying, why would God want to act devilish and murderous? Ok, maybe I’m ahead of myself, but just hold that thought.

Graduate Courses in the University of Divinity. Pain Is the Professor … Bringing Us Ever hOMe: Experience Is Divinity, Part Three — All We Are Saying … Is Give Love a Chance

The Greatest Teaching Is Also the Hardest Teaching: We Are One, Not Just With What We Admire, But Also With What We Despise … We Are One With the Darkness We Deplore

one-with-those-we-despise

jumpfrombldgintofiremanarms_thumbThis is the basis for what we call faith…which is the notion that the Universe, at base, is “friendly”…if not out and out loving…and that ultimately there is nothing to fear.

So, for pain, God is playing peek-a-boo with us…. Our Inner Divinity has blessed ourselves with it to guide us from danger toward our true path.

Of course we bitch and complain when we don’t get what we want, when misfortune brings down our cherished fantasies…and sure it is painful. But I doubt there is any of you who has not looked back at what you had intended and what you were guided to instead, and said, “Thank God I’m not in charge of my life… If I’d have gotten my way, well, hell, what a stupid idea that ended up being. God sure must love me to sustain and teach and guide me…in spite of myself.”

He does that for all of us and that’s what I meant about the pain being His blessing to us.

But of course there’s much more to it than that….

give-love-a-chance

All We Are Saying … Is Give God a Chance.

Take, for example, the ideas of heaven and hell. Those are the ultimate examples we have of our beliefs that pain is evil and is about God punishing us and conversely that pleasure is good and is about God rewarding us.

Hell. Seriously?

By the way, only humans could come up with something as horrible as a hell. ONLY humans—ones who are the most removed from the Divine themselves. For God, our Inner Divinity, could never come up with something like that. I’ll get into why later, assuming it is not readily apparent to you right at the moment. But for now, let’s just put it this way: There’s no hell. Not in the ultimate sense. Take my word for it.

There’s no hell, but does that mean everybody goes to heaven? Now, not quite, not exactly. Because, would heaven be getting what you ask for? Or do you think it would be getting what God—who knows everything—knows … you … want? That is to say, what you really need and the biggest part of you really wants….

230433_10151106813504775_759216669_n

Heaven Can Wait

jacobs-ladder-mccaulay-culkin-and-tim-robbinsDivinity might protect us from making bad mistakes through pain, but the other part of it is that we are allowed to go through with it… and find out…on our own…what a bad and dumb idea that is.

So in this sense it might be seen that “heaven” … or what amounts to our idea of getting what we ask for … might actually be not very good. Some might say that it would amount to a real hell. Ask King Midas, for example.

On the flip side, if what we ask for would actually lead to more suffering in the long run, then getting what we need to be happier in the long run might be rewarding and a blessing, even if it is initially painful and something we absolutely do not want when we get it. So, in this case, what might be seen as “hell” might actually be not very bad. Ask any alcoholic or drug addict who has hit bottom, for example.

not-the-end-of-the-world

Pain Is the Teacher … to Bring Us Back to Happiness.

Pain is the teacher. But it’s not pain that’s being imposed, or, is in any way a punishment. In fact, we are the ignorant ones who are picking pain. In some respect, the amount of pain one receives correlates with the amount of ignorance one is in. That is no different from saying that the longer one persists in doing the wrong thing, the longer one will suffer from the bad consequences of doing that: If one is too ignorant to stop hitting oneself on the head with a hammer, one is going to keep suffering. If one refuses to take remedies to get well, one will stay sick. If one does not face the truth about what we are doing to ourselves by polluting and radiating the globe, we will suffer more and longer … horribly in fact … for that kind of ignore-ance.

we-reject-all-His-blessings

But that is not the entire story, as it is also true that those who are further along in spiritual evolution—Christ is perhaps the best example—will take upon themselves, will bring to themselves, greater suffering for the purposes of learning the highest truths. Pain is the teacher, and some of us have opted to take graduate courses with the “master.”

amuletjewel_com_0020_1_1_img1__5047Indeed, some people, who happen to be at the “highest” levels of our refinement back to Unity, to Divinity, will take upon themselves the pain of others. This is the meaning of the bodhisattva—the one who refuses to go into enlightenment until all can go. This is the meaning of Kwan Yin and Avalokiteśvara, ever tearful in compassion for the suffering of the world. This is the meaning of Christ taking upon himself the sins of the world. It is as if at a certain point of our return hOMe we begin to reflect, or manifest, most strongly the qualities of Divinity which we are approaching. It is like at a certain point our Divine Nature is the least obscured from view.

Indeed, that is how we know of the the Divine. It is because we see it reflected or shining through in the actions of wholly others. It is because we see it reflected in the compassion and selflessness of the most evolved of us.

angels_portalThe bodhisattva stage, like the Centaur Chiron stage, is among the last stages of our return hOMe. It is as if we stand upon the edge of Unity and take a long mournful look at the ones we leave behind and refuse to go forward while others still suffer.

This is just prior to the greatest teaching of all—which also arises out of the pain and suffering that we have chosen at that stage. And this teaching is the hardest, for it involves not just removing the barrier to Divinity, but also acknowledging this last truth, which is that it is ourselves who has been causing, not just the pain we experience, but we participate also in the creation of the pain of Others. We realize that we ourselves are part of the mistakes and cruelty that we condemn in our concern for the suffering of others. We realize that we are One not just with what we admire, but also with what we despise.

ss-110127-egypt-unrest-09.ss_full

But beyond even that, suffering teaches us. We realize that there is nothing wrong with even that. We do not just forgive ourselves: We forgive others and in so doing are ourselves forgiven. The most common prayer in the Judeo-Christian world actually acknowledges this: It goes, “Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.” People think that part is again the tit-for-tat: If we forgive others, then we will be forgiven by the Divine.nothumanscat In fact, what it means is that in forgiving others we are also forgiving ourselves, for we are One with them. In judging others, we are judging ourselves. And in condemning others, we keep ourselves enslaved.

The boddhisattva refuses enlightenment until we all are enlightened. Is it possible then that in his turning his back on release he is also contributing to the imprisonment of everyone. But I am getting ahead of myself.

Prior to this awakening that we are One even with the darkness we deplore, we are at the stage Christ expressed on the cross when he said, “Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do.” One is at the point at which the boddhisattva is refusing enlightenment.

But we awaken to something beyond even that: We see that the entire thing is beautiful beyond belief, that it was always beautiful, even with all the “mistakes” built into it and all the darkness painted upon it.

163

But after this realization, also like Christ who suffered more then on the cross and just before his death said, “I and the Father are One.” And it is at this stage that even the boddhisattva accepts enlightenment. For what is realized is that enlightenment is not a state to be achieved, it is one to be realized: For one is One with All, has always been, and the only path necessary is the One that leads to realizing there is no path, never was, and there never needed to be one.

work.6391737.2.flat,550x550,075,f.experience-life-in-3d-seagulls-nz

More about that later.

But whether we are actively enrolling in advanced courses or being thrust into remedial ones through our ignoring consequences of our actions and refusing to do the “homework” we have assigned ourselves (karma), the Divine on the other side of this is ever helpful and loving, providing the exact amount of stimulus or pain to either teach us or wake us up.

How Pain Is Like Comedy:  They Help Us Remember Our Divine State of Unfear, Teach Us to Have Faith, and Reveal Wisdom Needed to Get Us hOMe

fantasypic8-snake1

You might ask yourself why humans are the only species that laughs. And this is where it gets really freaky. So you’ll be glad we have the laughter.

Pain Is Wisdom Gift-Wrapped

If you remove the veil between you and Divinity, what is the one feeling you cannot possibly have which is also the most difficult to deal with in life and yet is central to human existence?

Fear. Of course there’s no fear. When there is nothing hidden and you are surrounded with Love, how could there be? Conversely, human existence is characterized by limited knowledge, the creation of an unknown or darkness in which we can expand fear, and the acting that comes from such limited knowing and exaggerated fear which can appear to be unloving.

we-magnify-our-fear

And all of this creates pain.

But is pain truly unloving? I mean, in an ultimate sense?

538943_2997155348309_321971331_n

“God So Loved the World That He Gave Us Pain.”

Let us say, “God so loves us that He gives us pain.” By that I mean, Divinity feels so much compassion for the ways we humans manage to screw up—and by that I mean are able to separate ourselves from knowing Reality and create unknowing and darkness … what psychologists call an unconscious—that It gives us reminders and road signs on the way back hOme. He gives us all the wisdom we can take in.

However, in such ignorance we reject all “His” blessings. By putting a separation between us and our Divinity we put Divinity in darkness, in the Unknown, and all with It all Its blessings, including wisdom.

we-reject-all-His-blessings

We reject even the greatest gift that we as Divinity have given ourselves. We reject the clues and bread crumbs we have left for ourselves to follow to find the way back home. We reject the pain of life.

396858_424785517564337_1148559900_n

For the pain of life is actually wisdom that is gift-wrapped to hide its nature. This wisdom stays hidden until we accept our pain and open it, so to speak, to find the gift of understanding which brings with it always ever more release from the fear we have chosen….

We, as Divinity, of course want to show ourselves how there is never anything to be afraid of and that fear is an imaginary creation of ours.

Why You Don’t See Hyenas at Comedy Clubs

For if you felt one with God and thought of life’s dramas as a kind of play, would you have fear? Not a lot, would you? If you knew it was like the movie I was talking about… like you were sitting in a theater watching your life…while you would feel fear and other emotions you would do so in a way that they would even be desirable or fun, knowing there was no real dire consequences of any of it?

movies-as_-collective-dreaming_thumb

I’ll say this about nonhuman planetmates (a) they don’t laugh, and (b) they always have a sense that they’re one with God…. So they always have part of them knowing that they are just playing a character. But not so for us humans. So our fear and distress is magnified to the limits of our imagination. Indeed, imaginative people, creative people, will know how they have both more fear and more ecstasy than others … and so are also more likely to be labeled bipolar, by the way.

more-imagination-means-more-agony-more-ecstasy

The Absolute Earliest Preschool

A lot of the way we help ourselves remember our Divine state of unfear and reveal the wisdom needed to take us hOMe comes back to that peek-a-boo I was talking about. That is one of those bread crumbs that we, as Divinity, have provided ourselves right at the beginning of life. Just as the Divine provides the laughter to humans, which is a result of our little adult games of peek-a-boo we play with ourselves and with each other. So important is such learning that it is hard to find a mother-child who has not experienced it and reveled in peek-a-boo. Though I doubt any mother ever consciously knew why she was doing it except that it was fun and gave so much pleasure! Remember that word—pleasure.

309340_372804519481667_295636054_n

How Pain Is Like Comedy

And it is the same way with God and us as it is with mothers and their babies. Just as the Divine inspires mothers to play peek-a-boo to train children to not trust their fears as being real and we as adults act comical, tell jokes, and poke fun at each other to help each other learn there is nothing to fear, so also our Divine nature brings pain to us.

why-you-dont-see-hyenas-at-comedy-clubs

Pain is the next step of the peek-a-boo training. It is the hardest step. But the previous practices in peek-a-boo, joking and playful kidding, and laughter helps prepare us for this next step, where when we are fearful, we might have the expectation…and it would be righteous…that soon the clouds will part, the sun will shine…but even more than that…

11

Peek-a-Boo Is a Taste of God’s Training Later in Life

Remember, that early peek-a-boo training has an effect on you as a child: At first you were fearful but after a while you expect Mother to be there all the time…if you have enough experience of it. For, you see, peek-a-boo is a sample of training for God’s training later in life. Now…let’s put it this way:

Pain is God playing peek-a-boo with us.

He uses pain to guide us from danger and toward our true path.

pain-is-gift-wrapped-wisdom

In Spite of Ourselves….

GrofChristStan_StormySearchiconWhen we have enough experience in life—by that I mean when we have had enough trainings, practice, and events that have revealed the falsity and groundlessness of our fears—we know that pain is not the useless thing we start out thinking it is. We learn that when things are not going right…sometimes the car breaks down or we break our ankle…there may be a better outcome for us in store than if it had gone smoothly.

It requires self-reflection, of course, to see this. But how many times have we found out after the fact that the bad or painful thing was the perfect thing to have happened? How often have we realized that it was God, or our Inner Divinity, who was helping us out, derailing our plans, because we weren’t supposed to be doing something? Or we need to be doing something different? If you are reading this, I would bet that you have reached that point where you know that you are being guided to something better through some of your bad experiences.

vision-primal-renaissance

Pain Is God Playing Peek-a-Boo

So, just as God inspired mothers to train their infants to not trust their fears as being reality, just as we as adults enjoy the blessing of laughter as after each divine prank we learn how useless is our worry, He even set up the next step where when we are in pain we might have the expectation, and it would be true, that soon we will see things differently, that eventually we will be better for the experience, and that ultimately everything is just fine, that we even might be grateful for having gone through what we did.

How, From Birth, We Are Taught by Love, Prodded Out of Ego, and Embraced Again Into Unity: The Koans of Everyperson and How We Are “in Love’s Image”

in-loves-image

Our Supposed “Superior Intellect” and Language

60713_292030697575169_877345650_nOur supposed superior intellect is often named as what makes us different and what makes us “in the image of God.”

But our words don’t make us superior…they make us inferior…to all the other species…who just know, without having to struggle with symbols that are easily misinterpreted.

The language of the planetmates is not language; so much as it is mind-sharing. And all that needs to can be conveyed in a precise look…sometimes a smell…or just a howl…across the forest. One might think the information contained in such things could be only rudimentary, but this is hardly the case.

One might compare humans to typewriters…laboriously trying to make ourselves understood to each other…and ourselves…. 247776_10151113142564775_1664432107_nWhereas, what we lost with our separation from Nature and our devolution into ego—which came with that separation—is the kind of abilities that, as analogy, we see in computers.

Think of the size of a computer chip. It’s tiny. Now consider the amount of information it can convey, process, and so on.

Our species filter—our ego—just does not let us see that that kind of pure understanding among the parts of Nature is consistent with the natural biological perfection of all things.

Further, remember that each part of Nature is God having the fun of manifesting Him- Herself in that form, and simultaneously in all others…. 385280_2620769495833_132488932_nAnd since these nonhuman beings are not split off from the All That Is like we are they are still aware of their identity with Divinity. They are as aware of their true nature as when we go to a movie and still realize that what we see is not real and that our real existence is elsewhere….

So, all of Nature, except for unfortunate humans, have the sense of watching a drama, but none of it is all that scary. One might imagine they actually enjoy the scary parts … as a thrill, just the way you might enjoy a horror flick.

So, of course, they have, without trying, the knowledge that needs communicating, whenever. And that knowledge they know, so it’s not all that common that a need to communicate it even arises.

398720_236213656456242_1978116262_n

Language Is Our Attempt to Remember What We’ve Lost

It is only our separation from All That Is and our delusion of being separated from each other that brings up a need for a language. Language is our attempt to remember what we’ve lost and to connect back with each other, since we’ve forgotten we are each “other me’s.” Language is our act out of the loss we feel inside from having separated ourselves out as individual egos. But it is a mostly futile attempt, as act outs tend to be, for it directs us away from the direct knowing of our unity with each other which is discovered in feeling, which is discovered within. And when caught up in words, most folks most of the time are distracted from feeling their unity with each other, let alone All That Is.

How We Are “in God’s Image” – Our Daily “En-lighten-ments”

425015_4278692883491_586541788_n_thumbSo it is not in our big brains, supposed intelligence, or language that we are different from the rest of Nature and “made in God’s image,” so to speak. But there is a way that humans have a special link with the source of Love … with Divinity.

Let’s put it this way: One might say that Divinity felt so much compassion for the ways we humans managed to stray from Nature and thereby magnify our suffering that It gave us the most ordinary everyday reminder of our true Nature as unity and of the real nature of It All that we’d forgotten.original In us, humans, God reflects the essence of His manifesting Himself as Creation and the delight that comes with such play. Creation is Love’s leela, or play…. And it is very much like a play.

And it requires disintegration into parts, which—essentially alike, but with this fact forgotten—can interact in dynamic, infinite, and wondrous ways. Like the Universe expanding and becoming ever more complex and differentiated, Divinity manifests. The further from original unity is this expansion, the greater is the forgetfulness, the greater is the separation from All Else and each other.

312532_482146435175111_1614661610_n

The Cosmic Giggle

But there are constant reminders of our original and essential unity and of our nature as God… daily “enlightenments” … literally… daily epiphanies if you will.

They are like the koans of every person which reveal our true Nature as Bliss.

309178_2957007104628_308691114_n_thumbThe Universe displays the Nature of its Creation as play—which all the rest of Creation and all planetmates know intuitively—to humans in a most common yet profound way. Love is ever teaching us there is never anything to be afraid of, and that fear is an imaginary creation of ours—just the same as and going along with our separation from Nature.

It is there at the very beginnings of our lives, in fact. Love inspires the billions of human mothers … and more and more, fathers, too … to play the peek-a-boo game with their babies. Mother is not there …. the baby has a flash of distress. Where did Mother go? There is that momentary imperceptible fear that Mom is gone, disappeared, never to return.

Then suddenly Mom’s face appears from nowhere. How does the baby feel and react to it? Now, the baby is downright gleeful…and is beside her- or himself, can’t even contain her or his joy, claps its hands, laughs, and giggles….

godmovingmysteriouswaysdancejpeg_thumbThis play, this game is the essence of something humans do throughout their lives. It is a way of toying with fear, toying with distress … over and over reminding ourselves that there is nothing to fear in life. Other planetmates don’t have it … not the way humans do.

Later in life, we have people making entire careers out of doing this “peek-a-boo” for others. It is called comedy and these peek-a-boos are called jokes, but they have the exact same structure of the early games we played as babies: There is something introduced that indicates something unwanted or stressful might happen or be happening. You are led down that path a little and feel in yourself a slight discomfort, a tension.

the-cosmic-giggle

Then, suddenly, you discover there was never anything to be afraid of. You hear the punch line and realize, to your delighted surprise, that it was not about what you thought it was. In an instant you are aware you were wrong, you were fooled, and everything is actually right with the world. One “is downright gleeful…and is beside her- or himself, can’t even contain her or his joy, claps its hands, laughs, and giggles….”

So, the way we are made “in God’s image” and reminded of our true Nature as Bliss and our essential Unity?

It is our laughter.

Why Scientists, Unless They Are Einstein, Make Lousy Mystics: Being Able to Control and Predict Reality Is Hardly the Same as Understanding It

Trying to understand consciousness through science and physics, as in it is “light,” magnetism, fields … subparticles or dimensions … is like an ocean studying the composition of water to understand wetness.

The essence of reality is love, feeling, experience, awareness. These other things “out there” that we study are merely these direct experiences viewed indirectly … and incorrectly.

The horse that the aspirant has been searching everywhere to find … well, she has been riding it all along.

The Uses of Normal Knowledge and A Better Way of Knowing: Transpersonal Perspective — Experience Is Divine, Cognition Is Illusion, Part Eight

a-new-way-of-knowing

We are engaged in a completely different endeavor when we seek to understand Reality as opposed to merely controlling or predicting it. We are engaged in a completely different endeavor if we seek to understand people as opposed to merely controlling or predicting them as well…. We need to reverse the direction of abstractions and look directly into Experience, as it presents itself and not as it is interpreted. Even one tiny step of interpretation removed, one split-second of analysis later we are no longer in Reality, in Experience, we are in abstraction.

The Uses of Normal Knowledge

Certainly there is theory based on scientific premises and research that is considered to be real and factual. And the replicatibility and verifiability of these pronouncements add further to their credibility. But we are always to remember that they are abstractions, generalizations, of experience. Further, the experiences that they are usually generalizations of are those of an observer of an event that may be happening to another person or thing (which for that person or thing might be a direct experience but for the observer is already one step removed); therefore it is usually an abstraction of an abstraction. These abstractions of abstractions are then combined and worked together to form higher order theories and laws which are then another level of abstraction removed.

science-makes-castles-in-the-sky

Not that these abstractions don’t have their uses and purposes. The point is that we make a grave mistake when we presume that these abstractions are the things that they describe and the events whose actions are outlined. They have their purposes, as maps do, in terms of guidance and direction on how to control and predict such events and Realities.

Yet we are engaged in a completely different endeavor when we seek to understand Reality as opposed to merely controlling or predicting it. We are engaged in a completely different endeavor if we seek to understand people as opposed to merely controlling or predicting them as well. To do that we need to reverse the direction of abstractions and look directly into Experience, as it presents itself and not as it is interpreted. Even one tiny step of interpretation removed, one split-second of analysis later we are no longer in Reality, in Experience, we are in abstraction.

A Better Way of Knowing

But there is another way of knowing, another way of venturing after Truth. This methodology is radically different from the supposedly “empirical” one of the sciences. I say “supposedly” because this is in fact a more empirical approach—at least in the sense that Nietzsche meant when he used the term empirical, which became a foundation stone of modern science, but which modern scientists have apparently forgotten. These methods are the heuristic, the hermeneutical , and the interdisciplinary.

Hermeneutical

Truths that are rooted in raw Experience—ones that “hover” as close as possible to the actual Reality and are least removed of their vitality and least refined into abstraction must needs be largely speculative, based, as much of it is, on subjective reports. 02-morphic-3001So the ultimate relation between these experiences and other human cognitive, behavioral, and experiential structures—their degree and manner and direction of influence—will need to remain open.

Still, endeavors such as this are in the strongest traditions of the social sciences. This sort of hermeneutic approach is what has been called the “left-hand” of science, and it provides both the exploration of areas that cannot be served otherwise as well as it teases out implications and avenues for further research otherwise unseen.

Hermeneutics is the interpretive branch of science. It seeks to discover meanings inherent in events as perceived. SwansAnd while normally this endeavor is seen as an inferior route of understanding, within our dominant materialistic paradigm, and is only begrudgingly allowed on the basis that observers do apparently and irrefutably have some influence on events they perceive and are apparently needful of meaning, the preceding analysis should hopefully have made clear why I believe the hermeneutic route makes possible a superior understanding of an “object” of study.

morphic-resonance-600

For one cannot go into an objective study of something that is not on a more fundamental level a going into an aspect of one’s own experience. It is by acknowledging, boldly and up front, that subjective and inherently interpretive base of any study that one can most likely turn it 547378_556968007665561_75698933_nto one’s advantage in discerning the deepest and most important understandings of what is within one’s experiential focus of study.

As an example of how this can be so, take the analogous technique of participant observation in anthropology. It is the time-honored and required approach that anthropologists use in studying other cultures. It is based on the acknowledgment that a purely “objective” observation and analysis of a culture is profoundly flawed and that the only way one can hope to have the smallest possibility of understanding another’s culture is to participate experientially, to the extent that one is able, in the events of that culture.

So just as one cannot imagine that a detached perspective of a culture could possibly be superior to a participant perspective, so also is this participation vitally necessary and superior to other techniques in various other types of study. I submit that, among other studies, the spiritual and philosophical aspects of pre- and perinatal experiences are one such. So also are any philosophical or metaphysical studies of the nature of Reality and the meaning of Life.

monkey-thinkingIn the pictures accompanying, a scientist could only acknowledge existing in them, top to bottom, a board made of wood, two swans, the reflection of the sky off a pond, and a flock of birds. However the poet and philosopher sees that but more: a smiling face, with perhaps a red beard and hair; love and a heart, a man with a pointed beard looking wistfully into the water, perhaps at his reflection; and a contemplative woman. Now, is the Reality only what the scientist sees? Is it what the poet sees? Is it both? Is it more? Is it all?

What is The Truth? What is Reality?

Heuristic

In a similar way, the importance of the observer is emphasized in the tradition of heuristic research in humanistic psychology, as described by Clark Moustakas (1990). As he explains it, heuristic

refers to a process of internal search through which one discovers the nature and meaning of experience and develops methods and procedures for further investigation and analysis. The self of the researcher is present throughout the process and, while understanding the phenomenon with increasing depth, the researcher also experiences growing self-awareness and self-knowledge. (p. 9)

persepctive-look-at

Further:

[H]euristic research involves self-search, self-dialogue, and self-discovery; the research question and the methodology flow out of inner awareness, meaning, and inspiration. When I consider an issue, problem, or question, I enter into it fully. I focus on it with unwavering attention and interest. I search introspectively, meditatively, and reflectively into its nature and meaning. My primary task is to recognize whatever exists in my consciousness as a fundamental awareness, to receive and accept it, and then to dwell on its nature and possible meanings. With full and unqualified interest, I am determined to extend my understanding and knowledge of an experience. I begin the heuristic investigation with my own self-awareness and explicate that awareness with reference to a question or problem until an essential insight is achieved, one that will throw a beginning light onto a critical human experience. (p. 11)

The Best Possible Map: Both Kinds of Knowledge Combined

dreamtime_sisters_110_photo_s1I will be describing a model based on such inquiry as I’ve described above, hovering as close as possible to the experiential reality I am modeling. Yet it will be aided by other ways of knowing, more traditional, more scientific ones. However, in that it will have been essentially informed by the participant observer himself, i.e. , me, as well as the experiential reports of others who have journeyed into the same general domain, it will seek to go beyond the interpretations that are possible from solely the traditional sources.

That is, that to say Experience is Divine is not to say that it is perfectly true in the way that it is immediately interpreted. Interpretations are one step removed to be sure, and so immediately introduce the element of error in that abstraction. In addition, Experience being Divine does not mean that all experiences are equally valuable in providing us with fertile and useful interpretations or understandings.

icarus-newstead-793847

It is my belief that all experience is perfect in itself and can not be otherwise. That is a belief based upon my experience. It is not a necessary assumption for this work, but is something I share for the purpose of explaining how it is possible that Experience can be Divine in the sense of that word perfection.

delusional-unshared-worldsStill, we are aware that experience is sometimes called delusional or hallucinatory. This means essentially that it does not fit very well with the experiences of others who report experiences of that variety. But it is possible to think of these experiences as being perfect for the individual experiencer and yet not compatible with others of a similar variety. Then when we say that they are not real, we can be meaning that they simply do not conform to a general map for a particular group of beings (although they are Real for the person to whom they occur) and thus cannot be used usefully or to any good purpose by that group . . . by any other outside of the individual involved. So we distinguish between Reality as What Is and Reality as what is useful to another.

map-closely-upon-experienceSince I am basing my model on What Is—i.e. , direct experience, as closely mapped upon that as possible—but I am seeking to create a low-hovering abstraction that might be useful to others, I do not simply leave off with the descriptions of experience by myself and others but I measure them against the other kind of abstractions available in the Now—those that are associated with science and with the generalizations of the experiences of others. It is the combination of these—much as one needs both particle and waves in understanding light—that I feel comes closest to providing what is helpful, interesting, and yes, useful, in terms of our understanding of our Reality.

Footnotes

1. I prefer to use the term psyche with which to oppose matter, rather than mind, or “the mental,” as is traditionally done in philosophy. For I find that Mind means much less than what is intended here and leads to many misinterpretations in philosophy in general. Despite its long tradition of use, Mind is still confused with mind, in the common sense of the term, meaning intellect, thoughts, ideas, concepts, and so on; and hence is considered to be ultimately rooted in language. Such a train of thought which excludes the feeling or “bodily” component of the psychic (cf., Gendlin, 1992) or the experiential part of existence (cf., all existentialists) bespeaks a reality compatible to rationalists who appear to know of no experience outside of their thoughts. But there are others of us whose experience is constituted of much more than what is thought of, commonly, as “mind.” Hence, in the tradition of Carl Jung, it seems psyche is the appropriate term. For it is a term that points to the possible inclusion, in subjective reality, of “feelings,” “passions,” archetypal and transpersonal noncognitive/nonverbal experience, and the psychic.

The best term of all for what is meant here by the Absolute Idealistic Reality is probably Experience. But that is a term that is also, on its surface, heavily loaded with connotations and the baggage of a traditional philosophic heritage. So it is a position I will lead up to gradually and attempt to demonstrate in the analysis following. For now, Jung’s use of psyche—as more inclusive than mind—will suffice to point us in the right direction.

2. This is a description, according to Toms (1992, p. 89), that has been originally attributed to C. E. M. Joad.
